NATO Allies’ Task: Ensuring Continued Support for Ukraine for the Sake of Their Own Security

During a press briefing on February 16th, just before the start of the Munich Security Conference, NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg emphasized the importance of Allies’ continued support for Ukraine. In a video published on NATO News’ YouTube channel, Stoltenberg stated that it is in the Allies’ own interest to ensure Ukraine’s security and stability.

The ongoing conflict in Ukraine has been a major concern for the international community, and NATO has been actively involved in efforts to find a peaceful resolution. Since the beginning of the crisis, NATO has provided political and practical support to Ukraine, including through the deployment of multinational battalions in the country’s eastern regions.

Stoltenberg’s statement comes at a crucial time, as Ukraine is facing increasing aggression from Russia and ongoing challenges to its sovereignty and territorial integrity. The Secretary General stressed that NATO’s support for Ukraine will continue, as it is crucial for the security of the Alliance as a whole.

NATO’s commitment to Ukraine is based on the principles of collective defense and the indivisibility of security. As Stoltenberg stated, «When one Ally is attacked, the whole Alliance is attacked.» Therefore, it is in the Allies’ own interest to ensure that Ukraine remains a stable and secure country.

But NATO’s support for Ukraine goes beyond just military assistance. Stoltenberg also highlighted the Alliance’s efforts in helping Ukraine with reforms, modernization, and capacity building. This includes support for the country’s defense and security sector, as well as efforts to combat corruption and strengthen democratic institutions.

NATO’s involvement in Ukraine is not only about helping a partner country, but also about protecting the security and stability of the Euro-Atlantic region. As Stoltenberg stated, «A stable, secure and prosperous Ukraine is key for Euro-Atlantic security.» Therefore, Allies must continue to work together to support Ukraine and help it become a strong and resilient country.

The Secretary General also addressed the upcoming presidential elections in Ukraine, stressing the importance of ensuring a free and fair electoral process. He stated that NATO will continue to support Ukraine’s efforts to strengthen its democracy and institutions, and will closely monitor the situation during the elections.

In addition to NATO’s support, Stoltenberg also called on Russia to respect Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, and to fully implement the Minsk agreements. He emphasized that the conflict in Ukraine can only be resolved through a political solution, and that Russia must play a constructive role in achieving this.

In conclusion, NATO’s support for Ukraine is not only a moral obligation, but also a strategic necessity. As Allies, it is in our own interest to ensure that Ukraine remains a stable and secure country. NATO will continue to stand by Ukraine and provide the necessary support to help it overcome its challenges and build a better future for its citizens.
